Lost In the Wilderness With Mercury Rev

"What's that strip club there?"

Being home to dozens of nude dancing establishments, Sean Mackiowiak could've been thinking about any number of places. But it doesn't take a trained tour guide to know that when someone from out of town asks about a certain Atlanta strip joint, they're probably referring to the Clermont Lounge.

Especially if they happen to play in a band.

Just like any band who ever played The Point always has an Ernie Dale story to tell, tales of the Clermont's unique combination of all-sizes-welcome sleaze-appeal, friendly, no-bullshit staff and low-budget, anti-glitz atmosphere have over the years made the hotel basement bar a necessary rite of passage for bands coming through our burg. The Dresden Dolls made it in time for last call the night before opening for Nine Inch Nails at the Tabernacle. Speaking of whom, Trent Reznor has been known to hold court in the shadows. Basically, if you want to find any band playing Music Midtown this month, the Clermont is as good a place to start as any once they're off stage.

Mackiowiak, better known as "Grasshopper" to his bandmates and fans, has hazy recollections of his own Clermont deflowering. In town with his group Mercury Rev, they ended up at the Clermont after their show. Several hours later, Mackiowiak had loaded up on souvenirs. "I got a Blondie T-shirt," the guitarist boasts. "I also got a black eye!" Not from a drunken scuffle, mind you. He was simply the recipient of one of celeb Clermont dancer Blondie's patented, and violent, facial boob slaps.
