The Runaways [R]: As sleazy and seedy as music vid director Floria Sigismondi seeks to make her feature film debut, if you believe Cherie Currie the truth was even uglier. Now that she's made peace with overbearing svengali Kim Fowley, both were happily in attendance at the SXSW premiere of the film last month, so maybe that's a reason why Fowley's alleged sexual abuse of the teenaged girls in the group is nowhere in the movie. With the other members sadly relegated to the background (including a composite bassist named Robin), this is basically the story of the tumultuous association between Joan Jett, Currie and Fowley, and in those roles, Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Michael Shannon are spot-on. If you desire more dirt and details, watch the documentary Edgeplay, but as a compact account of a vital period in rock 'n' roll history, The Runaways succeeds as the story of raw talent and sheer determination overcoming multiple ugly hurdles to break out of a '70s L.A. wasteland, where parents are either absent, oblivious or alcoholic.
