"It started as a fake band. We felt like it wasn't serious; we had fake names; we had fake instruments; we had a guy sitting on stage watching TV!"

ImageIron Man II [PG-13]: Not only do I like it every bit as much as I liked the first one, it's good to find the Objectivism intact. The plot is right out of the Howard Roark handbook where a second-hander, Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) feels he has the right to be creative also – with someone else's effort. At that congressional hearing, Stark maintains that private ownership circumvents "the public good" determined by the State. Director Jon Favreau provides confident character insights which may puzzle non-comic followers. My favorite scene in this entire sequel comes when the drunken Stark shoots up his penthouse and we see Happy (Favreau) reach and take Pepper's hand. If you noticed the twinkle in Happy's eyes, those of us who read the comics know these two will be married, and in two cuts between Paltrow and Favreau, it's set up. As War Machine, Don Cheadle is in the most difficult position due to splintered allegiance. He steals one of Stark's suits for military usage, only to learn Hammer has a contract to produce replicas. Mickey Rourke's Russian Whiplash bases his hatred of the Stark family on his father being cheated, though he sat around for decades in a drunken stupor growing bitter. And then we see Tony Stark's dad, a cross between Walt Disney and Howard Hughes. Even the incidental closing theme song is a whimsical Disneyesque tune. What's not to love?
