Letters to Juliet [R]: Amanda Seyfried plays Sophie, a would-be writer with a hurried fiancé, played by Gael Garcia Bernal, who take their honeymoon in advance of the marriage. While in Verona, Italy, a 50-year-old letter falls to Sophie from a woman named Claire who, at age 15, was separated from the love of her life. Sophie responds, prompting Claire to show up. Until this point, I sat squirming, thinking to myself, "Other than Seyfried's amazing, angelic face, why am I seeing this movie?" But once Claire, played by Vanessa Redgrave, enters the picture, the movie is reignited when Claire's grandson accompanies her and he and Sophie knock words around as their loneliness transforms into romance. From its use of '60s female pop songs to stunning views of vineyards, though derivative it's not a bad little movie.
