The Sorcerer's Apprentice [PG]: In an attempt to capitalize on "wizards" like Harry Potter, Disney pillages Fantasia for this dingbat dork-physicist-meets-magic thrill-ride. Acting as if he'd taken leave from the set of She's Out of My League, Jay Baruchel plays pretty much the same dweeb who's unlucky in love but smart enough to synchronize Tesla coils to bad music. As a kid he encountered Balthazar (Nicholas Cage), one of Merlin's apprentice sorcerers. It seems Baruchel's character is heir to the title of supreme gobbledygook, as Horvath and Morgana are released from slumber. It's good to hear that when asked, "Are you a scientist or a magician," Cage answers, "Yes." The only real plus is the broom and mop sequence from the Mickey Mouse segment of Fantasia. It would've been even better if they'd danced to "Baby Come Back."
