Appropriately-titled second album from Colin Newman and wife Malka Spigel's current project is a far more solid and rewarding affair than '05's commendable Profile. It's as if Newman has accepted that Wire's retreated back into hibernation after its astonishingly strong and all-too-brief early-00s re-emergence, and has dived into GitHead full-bore. With its orderly, hypnotic rhythms; clinical basslines; clean, layered guitar flourishes; and Newman's detached vocals and dread-filled poetry, Art Pop really has more in common with Wire's (and Newman's) late-80s phase, albeit a trifle warmer. Like much of Wire's work from both those periods, this feeling of dislocation and disconnection in the digital age hovers over things, as if we're all party to a great monotone march into the abyss. Yet then you notice your feet are tapping and your head is bobbing, and somehow that universal commonality gives you hope.
