The Dilettantes101 Tambourines [Stranger Touch] Get It at Amazon Remember that weird, funny guy with the muttonchops who used to do nothing but play tambourine and look dopey in the Brian Jonestown Massacre? Well, he's got this new band called The Dilettantes, and HOLY SHIT THEY ARE FUCKING AWESOME!! Sure, it's in the same paisley revivalist mode as BJM, but there's a lighter playfulness to it that could not have emerged under the deranged star-trip of someone like Anton Newcombe. Irresistible, refreshingly upbeat and rockin' psyche-jangle that can stand with the best of them (it is so much better than the last few BJM efforts), and Joel Gion (the tambourine dude) proves to be a remarkably convincing frontman. I mean, I know I'm a doddering old fool anymore and don't know trip-hop from aggrotech, but this is definitely the best thing I've heard all month, if not all year. |
